Cover Run

Recently, I purchased "Cover Run: The DC Comics Art of Adam Hughes". The book chronicles Hughes' 20 plus years with DC Comics. Hughes is best know for his runs as the cover artist for "Wonder Woman" and "Catwoman".

This book is filled with personality. Upon reading Hughes's introduction I realized that this isn't 208 pages of patting himself on the back. Hughes gives insightful commentary on the evolution of his techique, mistakes that saw print, how "joke sketches" became the final cover and the difficulty of illustrating Wonder Woman's "DAMNED KINGDOM COME ARMOR".  As a person that enjoys listening to DVD audio commentaries, I found this to be just as enjoyable as the artwork.

Speaking of which, the artwork is simply gorgeous. Each cover is displayed on a full page which gives readers a chance to examine and appreciate the descriptions given by the artist. We are also treated to rough sketches which shows the journey from concept to finished product. It doesn't take long to understand why Hughes is DC Comics' "go to guy" for covers!

He's not so bad at drawing the ladies either!

This book is a must have for any fan of DC Comics or Hughes. Here's to hoping that we will see a 2nd  volume and that Adam Hughes will sign my copy at The Baltimore Comic Con!

Here's a sample of some of my favorite covers. Enjoy!
